Driving In and Around Saint Tropez

As Saint-Tropez is a popular pit stop on the French Riviera driving route, the resort’s main roads can get become heavily congested, especially during the high season. Try to plan your journeys, or travel outside peak hours on the D984 to avoid the occasionally busy traffic.

The best place to park your car rental in Saint-Tropez is in the large parking lot near the harbor, ideally located for access to the sights of the old town and the fantastic seafood restaurants dotted around it. From this parking lot, the town’s citadel – with its grassy banks and panoramic views – is just an eightminute drive away.

One of the most popular beaches around Saint-Tropez is Pampelonne, found in the neighboring commune of Ramatuelle. It’s less than 15 minutes away with your rental car along the D93.

If you’re driving through Saint Tropez in a rental car, you’ll need to drive on the right-hand side of the road and there are a number of road rules in France to note. You must not use your phone while your engine is on – even if you’ve stopped or pulled over with hazard lights on. Keep a close eye on speed limits, which vary from 50km/h (31mph) for driving in built-up areas, 110km/h (50mph) for roads outside towns and cities, and up to 130km/h (80mph) on highways in dry conditions.
