A Quick Guide to Reims

Experience the sparkle of Reims, the French city with a rich champagne-making heritage. While most of the city’s history was lost after being bombed during World War I, there’s still a wealth of cultural sites to discover before heading out into the gorgeous green surroundings in your holiday car rental.

Basilique de Saint Remi in Reims

Historic Attractions

The standout attraction of any visit to Reims is undoubtedly the Cathédrale Notre-Dame. Slightly larger than its namesake in Paris, this magnificent gothic structure is where more than 30 kings of France were crowned.

The church’s unique façade is adorned by thousands of statues – see if you can spot its famous smiling angel as you stand outside. Inside, you can admire the intricate stained-glass windows that date back to the 13th century as they bathe the cathedral in colorful light.

Not far away from the cathedral, you’ll find another of the city’s historic attractions, the Basilique Saint-Remi. This exceptional building dates back to the 11th century, but like the cathedral, it was badly damaged during World War I and took several decades to restore. An array of religious relics can be seen here, along with the tomb of the city’s patron Saint Remi.

Champagne Heritage

Dedicate an afternoon to the champagne houses nestled within Reims. More than 150 miles of champagne cellars lie beneath the city’s streets, storing around 200 million bottles.

Taittinger and Veuve Clicquot are among the famous producers located on the site of Saint-Nicaise Hill, a Roman UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a tour of the atmospheric cellars carved from chalk and discover how champagne is made. You can even pick up a purchase from the onsite shop to take home with you and enjoy once you’ve safely parked your holiday car rental for the night.

View of the Eiffel Tower

City of Lights

Who can resist the charm of Paris? Less than 100 miles away from Reims in your holiday car rental, the magical French capital is a must-see while in the area.

Atmospheric cafes, designer boutiques and leafy parks are peppered throughout the elegant boulevards, but a great place to start your trip to Paris is with its most famous attractions.

First stop, the Eiffel Tower. Admire its vast iron architecture from the Champ de Mars before taking the elevator up to the viewing platform to enjoy spectacular panoramic vistas of the city.

Make your way to Ile de la Cité to see the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris. The 13th century church’s magnificent façade, decorated with gargoyles and flying buttresses, is a truly spectacular sight. Finish off with a wander around the Louvre, one of the world’s top art museums and home to Leonardo da Vinci’s famous ‘Mona Lisa’.

Driving In and Around Reims

Surrounded by vineyards, Reims is a pleasure to drive around in a holiday car rental. It enjoys excellent road links to the surrounding towns and rural areas, with some of France’s major cities also not too far away.

The A26, A4 and A34 surround the city, with the D944 running directly through its heart. Use Cours Anatole to reach the beautiful gothic cathedral and the UNESCO-listed Palais du Tau. There’s plenty of parking available, so you can park your Reims car rental and explore by foot.

With a holiday rental car, you also have the freedom to explore some of the highlights of the Champagne-Ardenne region during your visit to Reims. The Montagne de Reims Champagne Route is one of the most scenic drives to take, winding its way through the lush vineyards and rolling hills of Marne Valley.

Stop off at the famous champagne houses along the way to see how they create their top tipples. Épernay is one of the best towns along the route to visit, just 40 minutes away via the D951. Just remember to let someone else handle the tasting if you’re doing the driving.

Paris, the elegant French capital, is under two hours away in your Reims car rental if you take the A4. Here you can discover some of its most iconic sights or enjoy the rollercoasters and array of attractions at Disneyland. Fontainebleau, a town ringed by beautiful forest, takes a little longer to reach but is worth the trip to see its incredible 12th century château.

In France, you’ll be driving on the right and overtaking on the left. Some of the more rural roads in France can be narrow and winding, so take extra care in your holiday car rental and make sure you allow plenty of time for your journey.

With a rental car from Reims, it’s possible to explore all of this and more during your visit to France’s famous Champagne region.
