Driving In And Around Montpellier

Elegant and grand, this sun-kissed city by the sea is one of France’s most cosmopolitan locations. Montpellier Airport is located in the outskirts, just a 20-minute drive in your car rental along the D66.

The center of Montpellier has several pedestrianized areas, but you’ll find appropriate parking lots around the city where you can leave your holiday car rental from Montpellier Airport safely and travel on foot. Parking Indigo is handy if you’re heading for the botanical gardens or cathedral. If you’re planning on shopping up a storm, use Parking de la Comédie. When the sun is shining, travel along the D62 to Plage de l'Espiguette, the city’s best beach.

Montpellier Airport is near to one of the busiest, best-connected highways in the south of France. The A6 opens up the wider region to you, which means cities such as Toulouse and Narbonne can be explored.

Follow the A6 along the coastline, through the picturesque setting of the Narbonnaise natural park. Beautiful scenery spans for miles across this area, which means you can enjoy unbeatable views as you drive. Within the park, you’ll find hiking trails, tranquil lagoons and unspoilt beaches – perfect for outdoor lovers and sun worshippers.

If you don’t want to venture too far from Montpellier, pay a visit to Nimes, just 45 minutes east along the A6. This historic city is famous for its well-preserved ruins and statues that date back to the Roman Empire. Discover a 2,000-year-old limestone temple and watch a show in the double-tiered amphitheater.

If you’re renting a car at Montpellier Airport, you’ll be required to drive on the right-hand side of the road. Also, as in the US, freeways here are known as autoroutes and many of them are tolled. The speed limit on these is 80mph (130km/h), which reduces down to 30mph (50km/h) in urban areas. Seat belts must be worn by the driver and all passengers, while mobile or cell phone use while driving is illegal.

A Quick Guide To Montpellier

Founded in the 10th century by the counts of Toulouse, vibrant Montpellier is a dreamy destination thanks to the charming medieval architecture comprising its historic center.

When you reserve a rental car at Montpellier Airport, you can discover the city’s Gothic monuments, admire the harbor and bathe in sunlight on the tree-lined Esplanade where markets and food stalls create a friendly buzz.

Marvel at Montpellier’s top sights

You’ll discover a treasure trove of European art inside Musée Fabre, where 3,500 drawings and sculptures and 900 engravings decorate the walls. Beginning from the 14th century, the pieces take you on a trip through time. Monet, Rubens and Soulages all have works on show here and there’s a full wing dedicated to contemporary art.

Juxtapose this with a trip to Jardin des Plantes. Created during the 16th century, this beautiful green space is the oldest botanical garden in France. Exotic flora fills the urban oasis, with everything from bamboo to palm trees decorating the pathways. Inhale the sweet scent of florals as you meander through the park and make your way into the greenhouse to see a tropical blend of banana trees, creepers and orchids.

Lap up the laidback Mediterranean lifestyle

Spend the morning at Carnon Plage, one of the beaches closest to the city. Feel the white sand trickling between your toes as you stroll along the shore and take a dip in the refreshing waters.

After a relaxing morning basking in the sun, head into the city. Food lovers will be in paradise, with a parade of Michelin-starred restaurants creating the perfect opportunity to experience French fine dining. If you’d prefer a meal with less pomp, stroll through Halles Castellane and pick up fresh ham, local cheese and homemade bread, perfect for a picnic.

Safely park your holiday car rental from Montpellier Airport and spend the afternoon leisurely wandering the elegant streets, admiring the grand architecture, lush gardens and romantic fountains. From the 17th century Arc de Triomphe to the Hôtel de la Vieille Intendance, there’s plenty to see.

Hike to Pic Saint-Loup summit

The beauty of renting a car at Montpellier Airport is that there’s nothing stopping you from exploring more of the region. Make your way to the spectacular Pic Saint-Loup nestled within the Languedoc-Roussillon countryside and embrace your inner explorer. This dramatic peak soars to an impressive 2,150 feet with a blanket of green vegetation rising into the sky.

Hike along the marked-out route through the untouched landscape and brush past Aleppo pine, Kermes oak and Arbutus trees as you venture up the steep trail. When you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of rural France.

If you’d like to see this beautiful region of France in all its Gallic glory, explore it at your own pace with car rental from Montpellier Airport.
