A Quick Guide To Cannes

Cannes is known worldwide for its Film Festival, one of the biggest events in the Hollywood calendar which sees movies competing for the coveted Palme d’Or. But there’s plenty more to see in this sun-kissed city, no matter what time of year you decide to visit. Just hop in your Cannes car rental and start exploring with ease.

Strolling around the busy marina, it’s hard to believe that Cannes was once a quiet fishing village. Today it’s a world-famous resort which attracts visitors from far and wide thanks to its nightlife, high-end restaurants and casinos.

The centerpiece of the city is La Croisette, a beautiful boulevard that stretches for more than a mile along the seafront. Shaded by pretty trees, it’s a great place to explore designer boutiques and dine on fresh seafood. Park your Cannes rental car nearby and take a peek for yourself.

Some of the best beaches in Cannes fringe La Croisette. Sandy Plage Mace and Plage du Casino are both free to enjoy – so pack your towel and spend a day basking in the French sunshine. Îles de Lérins, another sun-baked retreat, is just a short boat journey from the mainland if you’re looking for a more secluded spot. The waters around the two islands are excellent for diving and snorkeling and are home to many protected marine species.

Take a step back in time at Le Suquet, Cannes’ atmospheric old quarter whose roots can be traced back to the 10th century.

Meander along the maze of tranquil streets, filled with cafes and restaurants, and make a beeline for the medieval castle at the top of the hill. Reach the summit and you can enjoy sweeping views of the glittering sea and city.

Today, the castle is home to a fascinating museum with artefacts from all over the Mediterranean. Next door is Notre Dame de l’Esperance, a 15th century church and square from which you can enjoy more excellent views of the city and surrounding bay.

Le Suquet is also home to many boutique stores selling locally produced food and clothing, so it’s the perfect place to pick up some souvenirs. Or you could head into one of the cafés and enjoy the view over the rooftops and out to the sea beyond. Just make sure you find a suitable parking spot to park your Cannes rental car.

A trip to the French Riviera wouldn’t be complete without visiting its capital, Nice. Spread out around the Bay of Angels, this show-stopping city has more than four miles of beach to sink into and a bounty of belle époque architecture.

Promenade des Anglais is the obvious starting point for any day trip to Nice. Wander along the palm-lined seafront in the direction of the old town, known locally as Vieille Ville.

As you stroll through the warren of narrow cobblestone streets, pastel-hued buildings and buzzing squares unfold before your eyes. Cours Saleya, a buzzing plaza, is where you can really see the old town come to life, with flower and food markets taking place throughout the week.

Driving in and Around Cannes

Rent a car in Cannes and experience the epic beauty of the French Rivera’s coastal roads. Like much of the rest of Europe, you’ll drive on the right-hand side of the road and it’s compulsory for all passengers to wear seatbelts.

Boulevard Carnot runs from the nearby A8 into the heart of the city. Make your way down to the waterfront and you’ll see that Boulevard de le Croisette, lined with swanky hotels and designer boutiques, is a truly scenic drive. Head round to the port in your Cannes rental car and use of one of the parking lots, then you can explore the historic district of Le Suquet by foot.

Cannes is perfectly positioned to discover more of the Côte d'Azur’s treasures, connected by a series of highways, known here as autoroutes. These are marked with an A and come with a speed limit of 80mph (130 km/h), but this can vary according to weather.

Follow the D6007 east and in just 30 minutes you can be in the historic port of Antibes. Nice is also close by, just under an hour away via the A8 in your Cannes car rental. Here you can take a picture-perfect stroll along the Promenade des Anglais and experience the charm of its quaint old town.

Head west along the A8 and Cannes’ equally glitzy sister Saint Tropez is 90 minutes away. Carry on along this road and in just over two hours you’ll reach the historic port of Marseille – the perfect stop after traveling in your Cannes rental car.

Gems can be found inland, too. Follow the D6185 and in under an hour you’ll discover an outdoor paradise at Préalpes d'Azur Natural Regional Park. Among the spectacular mountainous landscape, you’ll find medieval villages and dramatic gorges.
