Luton

With the capital city of London just 30 miles south of Luton, this is the perfect place to begin any trip to the UK. A series of comprehensive, toll-free motorways (freeways) and major roads lead from the airport to the cities and rural towns of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

If you’re visiting Luton itself, the airport is just a five-minute drive from the town via Kimpton Road. Those heading into the capital can drive south on the M1 into the heart of London in just over an hour. A Congestion Charge is in operation in the city center, which can be paid online in advance. If you have any questions about it, our pick-up location team will be more than happy to help.

Look beyond London and you’ll find the area around Luton has a wide range of activities and quaint markets towns ideal for a family vacation. The walking trails in the east of the Chiltern Hills can be accessed from Whipsnade, just a 20-minute drive via the B4540 from Luton. Here you’ll also find an excellent zoo and a golf course.

Luton Airport is located between the scholarly cities of Oxford and Cambridge, and it’s more than an hour’s drive to each. Take the A418 west to Oxford or the A505 east to Cambridge.

If you’re planning on visiting Warner Brothers Studio to take the Harry Potter tour, it’s only a quick 25-minute journey south down the M1. Free parking is available onsite.

While in the UK you’ll use the left-hand side of the road. All passengers are required to wear seatbelts and the use of cell or mobile phones while behind the wheel is banned. Speed limits here vary by the road type – on freeways the maximum is 70mph, which reduces down to 30mph in urban areas.

Family days out

Harry Potter fans will be in heaven at the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studio Tour, just north of the capital. Life-size sets mean you can walk down Diagon Alley, step into the Great Hall of Hogwarts and feel the magic around you. Shop for your own wand in the merchandise store and take a peep behind the scenes at the special effects and movie costumes.

Take a walk on the wild side with a trip to Whipsnade Zoo, only a quick drive from Luton. Nestled in the beautiful Dunstable Downs, this park is home to Serengeti lions, Asian elephants, Siberian tigers and many other exotic species from around the world. Palaces and parks

Experience the regal charm of the British monarchy with a trip to Buckingham Palace. Here you can watch the daily changing of the guard, where soldiers dressed in bright red tunics and bearskin hats march from Wellington Barracks to the palace to the sound of a brass band. Inside you can tour the lavish state rooms that have hosted kings, queens and global leaders and catch a glimpse of the thrones of Her Majesty and Prince Phillip.

The home of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Kensington Palace, is also worth a visit. Discover the treasures that lie within the 17th century royal residence - gaze at the vivid artwork decorating the King's Staircase and take a peep at the grand Queen’s State Apartments. But the real highlight is the Palace Gardens, boasting formal flower beds, tinkling fountains and the mesmerizing sunken garden.

Kensington Palace is nestled on the west side of Hyde Park, London’s largest and most popular green space. Here you can inhale the rich scent of roses in the Rose Garden, go boating on the Serpentine Lido and stop by the Diana Memorial Fountain.

Scholarly cities

Luton Airport is halfway between Oxford and Cambridge, so you can take your pick between the two oldest universities in the country.

Exploring the tangle of ancient cobble streets in Cambridge is magical. Wander from one ancient university building to other – marvel at the extraordinary Gothic detailing of the 16th-century King's College Chapel and pause to admire the elegant façade of Trinity College.

There are more adventures to be found behind the buildings. Known locally as The Backs, the leafy space is punctuated by the River Cam. Take the opportunity to go ‘punting’, a ride aboard a flat-bottomed boat that’s propelled by a long pole.

Oxford is equally as impressive. Discover the winding streets and cozy bookshops that inspired JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis, before drinking in the beauty of the university buildings.

Oxford University dates back to the 11th century and Christ Church College is one of its finest slices of land - you may recognize it as the backdrop for the Harry Potter films. Take the guided tour to discover more about its rich history –Albert Einstein and Lewis Carroll studied here, along with many more of the great and good.

A rental car from Luton Airport allows you to enjoy the freedom of exploring southern England at your own pace.
