If you’re visiting Portimão, you don’t want to miss out on going to the Portimão Circuit. Designed to push every race car and bike to the limit, this favored circuit presents an exciting challenge to drivers, and entertaining visuals to onlookers.
The Portimão Circuit opened its doors in 2008, but plans for the racetrack were first announced in 2002. Issues with finding the finances to fund the project caused the long delay. However, once the Portuguese government announced plans to boost the economy by creating new jobs and improving tourism, support for the venture began to rise.
The Portimão Municipal Assembly allocated two plots of land (800 acres in total) for the new circuit. In February 2008, the final plans for the racetrack were presented at an opulent ceremony, with the layout showing that the track conformed to the highest FIM and FIA standards. The modern complex features a track, a racing school, an onsite hotel, a technology park and much more.
The track features multiple uphill and downhill segments, and the corners follow the straights in quick succession. It also has steep elevation sections that create a thrilling rollercoaster-like effect.
Navigating the track in the clockwise direction, drivers encounter a variety of challenges:
Turn 1 – Primeira: This is the starting challenge. It's a tricky corner that demands precise steering from drivers to navigate it effectively.
Turn 5 – Torre VIP: As drivers approach this section, braking becomes vital. The presence of bumps and an early exit towards the next turn adds to its complexity.
Turn 10: The apex of this turn sits atop a hill, limiting drivers' view and adding a layer of difficulty.
Turns 11 and 12 – Portimão: Immediately following Turn 10, these turns are the most technical parts of the circuit. With their tight, sharp turns, they require utmost precision.
Turn 13 and 14 – Sagres: These turns present great opportunities for overtaking, but it's essential to get the exit to the corner just right for success.
The Portimão Circuit can hold a capacity of up to 100,000 spectators, this includes a VIP tower that has 15,000 seats. Here are some of the various seating options:
This large viewing area provides spectators with amazing views of the circuit, covering a huge portion of the track. With a capacity of 16,000, a seat here will provide you with a breathtaking view of the race’s start and finish.
In this viewpoint there are two massive video walls to provide you with an even better view should the drivers ever go out of sight. There are also plenty of food and drink vendors nearby if you need to refuel.
Just to the left of the main grandstand, also on the main straight, is West Stand. Offering a great view of the start and finish line, the atmosphere here is incredible as you’re able to see drivers tackle the tricky first corner of the first lap.
Another excellent viewing choice for races at Portimão Circuit, the North Stand overlooks the intense first corner. You get an impressive head-on view of the first turn, allowing you to see drivers battle for their initial positions. This stand is an overtaking hotspot and will guarantee excitement from the very start. Here’s a top tip for you – sit near the left if you want a better view of the big screen.
With mid-tier pricing, you won’t get as great a view as the previous options, but you will be in a decent position to see turns 2,3 and 4. Plus, there’s a large video screen that you’ll be able to see on the inside of the track, just on the right-hand side.
A fantastic value option, this seating option is more affordable and offers a decent view of the main straight. Sitting here, you’re also perfectly positioned to see the last corner of the race.
If you’re lucky enough to get a spot in VIP, you’ll get a privileged view over the track, as well as access to parking, an on-site restaurant and seating in executive boxes.
