Where is Portimão Circuit?

Portimão Circuit, also known as Algarve International Circuit, is in the beautiful southern Portuguese city of Portimão. You’ll find it in the parish of Mexilhoeira Grande, near Portimão at Sítio do Escampadinho. This is around 4.5 km north of the A22 motorway. The racetrack is only a 15-minute drive from Portimão and Lagos.

Where Are the Best Places to Watch the Action at Portimão Circuit

Here’s our list of the best places to watch the action at Algarve International Circuit:

Grandstands/ Bancada Principal

The grandstands section is a large viewing area that offers amazing views of the racing action. There’s a capacity of 16,000 and a huge portion of the track is covered here. There are two gigantic video walls to provide you with even more viewing options, plus you can expect an excellent viewpoint of the race’s start and finish from this position.

There are lots of food and drink options for when hunger strikes and the stands are covered in case of any adverse weather.

There are different seating options available within the main grandstand itself. This includes a cheaper lower track level option and an upper ‘superior’ tier section.

 

West Stand

Located to the left of the main grandstand, the West Stand offers spectacular views and an amazing atmosphere. You’ll get a great look at the race’s start and finish line and be in an excellent position to see the thrilling first corner of the race – a well-known overtaking hotspot.

There’s a range of food and drink facilities available here but be prepared to queue as this is one of the busier areas of the racetrack.

North Stand / Bancada Meo

If you’d like a clear view of the intense first corner of the race, the North Stand is the place to be. This option gives you a front-facing view of the first turn and you’ll get to see your favorite drivers go head-to-head after lights out.

This is truly an overtaking hotspot! The tension can be felt here and as well as a superb view of the first corner, you’ll also be in a great spot to see the second and third turns of the racetrack.

For a better view of the big screen at this stand, try to get a seat on the left side.

Sul Stand / Bancada Sul

Sul offers amazing value for money, as well as excellent views of the race and a thrilling atmosphere. You’re in a prime position to see the last corner and you get a great view of the main straight. There’s a large video screen in this section and plenty of food and drink options nearby.

 

Portimão Stand / Bancada Portimão

This stand looks out over an apex bend, so you’ll get a fantastic view of the race. Sit here to get an excellent perspective of how tough the race can be and the talent of the drivers. You’ll see them weave in and out as they fight for their positions later in the competition.

In this stand, there’s also a video screen to ensure that you don’t miss any part of the action.

 

Portimão 2 Stand / Bancada Portimão 2

Photographers should flock to this part of the Portimao Circuit to get the best pictures of the action. Primely positioned at turn 8, this stand offers great views of the technical downhill section at a mid-range price.

Watch as the drivers tackle the section of the track that leads them into a tight, narrow corner. There’s a big screen available to view here and food, drink and toilet facilities are all located close by.

One thing to bear in mind is that there aren’t as many food and drink options here as there are at other areas of the track, so you may have to queue for a while.

VIP

Naturally, these comfy executive seats in the VIP section are the most expensive, but you’ll get a privileged experience with excellent 360° views of the track. Sit here to access special amenities like parking, an on-site restaurant and an open bar.

 

How do I get to Portimão Circuit?

There are plenty of ways to get the Portimão Circuit, here are the most common options:

By Plane

The closest airport to the Portimão Circuit is Faro Airport (FAO).  Fly here for an easier journey to the racetrack. It’s less than an hour’s drive to the east. Check out flights with EasyJet and Ryanair, as these typically have the most connections from Europe.

By Car

Positioned conveniently between Portimão and Lagos, the circuit is a swift 20-minute drive from either location. And with the entrance closely accessible from the A22 motorway, your journey is set to be hassle-free. By Public Transport

Mexilhoeira Grande is the closest train station to Algarve International Circuit, located just 10km away. The local train services run along the coast to Faro, as well as the Spanish border. Although they don’t service the circuit directly, you can hop on one of the local Eva Transportes buses to get to the track.
