How Many EVs Are There in Missouri

In terms of electric car ownership in Missouri, there are currently close to 18,000  EVs in the state. This may sound a small number, but it’s actually much higher than other US states like Iowa (6,220), Idaho (5,940), and Arkansas (5,140). But it’s nowhere near the EV powerhouse states like California and Florida, which have close to one million and 167,000 respectively. Los Angeles alone has 139,000.

The 18,000 figure counts for less than one percent of all vehicle registrations in the state. It seems gasoline vehicles are still the norm, for now at least. In terms of the overall US EV scene, the figure is even less – at 0.69%. Despite this, it’s on the rise – with ownership increasing by almost 50% in recent years. However, we’ve not yet seen Missouri enter the Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) program list.

Snapshot overview:

  • Total number of EV registrations – 17,870
  • Percent of total vehicle registrations in state – Less than 1%
  • Percent of total US EV registrations - 0.69%
  • YOY growth of ownership in recent years - +49.11%
  • Is the state a part of the Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) program? - No

Are there Incentives for Electric Cars in Missouri

For electric car rebates in Missouri – there are no tax credits  on offer. But you can expect to receive up to $500 from private energy companies that offer this incentive to encourage people to have EV chargers installed in their own homes. The state’s also well-stocked for free charging points – there’s lots dotted around the big cities. You can expect more to crop up in the near future, too, as they become more popular. There are no free perks either such as money off charging  costs.

Missouri EV Charging Network

There are close to a thousand electric car charging stations in Missouri. This is much more than Alabama (254), Alaska (59), and Mississippi (95). But also much lower than Georgia (1,537) and Massachusetts (2,334).  It costs just $0.12 per kWh to charge your electric vehicle in your own back yard, and more than double that, at almost 30 cents per kWh, to charge a Tesla Model 3 in public. Out of all the states, it sits in 23rd position for running costs. This means a $2.11 cheaper cost than the national average for a full charge of an F-150 Lightning.

There’s investment coming though, with $98.9 million from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) formula. More money means more charging spots and better infrastructure for electric vehicles overall. Things can only get better for EV usage in the state.

Closer look:

  • Total number of charging stations in this state - 985
  • Typical costs of use - $0.12 per kWh for home charging and $0.28 per kWh in public for a Tesla Model 3.
  • Plans to invest/expand the charging network - $98.9 million investment from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) formula funding.

There we have it, the number of EVs in Missouri is growing. The state already sits in a solid position in terms of its setup. Not tiny, but not huge either. A steady EV system in place means stronger foundations for growth. Expect to see bigger horizons for the green motoring industry in the Show-Me State.
