  • Interstate 10 (I-10) heads into Arizona from Los Angeles on the Californian coastline, the I-10 continues through the west to Phoenix, where it heads north-east towards Tucson, then continues east from here and into New Mexico.
  • Interstate 8 (I-8) starts in San Diego, California, the I-8 continues through the west of Arizona, joining the I-10, halfway between Phoenix and Tucson.
  • Interstate 17 (I-17) takes you north out of Phoenix, through the Coconino National Forest up to Flagstaff.
  • Interstate 40 (I-40) is the first step to following the iconic Route 66 through Arizona, part of which is on the I-40. This interstate takes you from west to east in the north of the state. It begins in California, passes through Flagstaff in Arizona, and continues into New Mexico.

Before hopping into your Arizona car rental, you should ensure you have a firm understanding of the state’s driving laws. Here are a few of the main state laws for driving in Arizona:

  • You must have a valid driver’s license and seat belts must be worn at all times while driving.
  • Speed limit laws in Arizona are usually 55 or 65mph on interstates when passing through a city. Between cities, this increases to 75mph. You’ll find that the limit is often 25mph in residential areas.
  • Abide by the “Move Over Law” – this requires all drivers to move into another lane to offer a clear path to approaching emergency vehicles that have their lights activated. In some cases, you may have to stop until the emergency vehicle passes.
  • In Arizona, the left lane on multi-lane highways can only be used for passing. When driving in the left lane, you must travel faster than traffic in the right lane. If you’re not passing, you must remain in the right lane. Failure to follow these rules could result in fines.
  • Arizona’s Hands Off Law states that drivers are prohibited from talking, texting, or the like using a standalone electronic device such as a cell phone or tablet, except in “hands-free” mode.
  • Some municipalities in Arizona have prohibited smoking with a child in their vehicle.
