All about Subaru

Subaru is a Japanese car manufacturer that was founded in 1953 as a division of Fuji Heavy Industries. The company's name "Subaru" is the Japanese word for the Pleiades star cluster, which is also known as the "Seven Sisters."

Subaru initially focused on producing small cars and in 1958 introduced its first vehicle, the Subaru 360, which was a small, lightweight car that quickly became popular in Japan. In the 1960s, Subaru started exporting vehicles to other countries, including the United States.

In the 1970s, Subaru introduced its first four-wheel drive vehicles, which were marketed as a safer option for drivers in snowy or slippery conditions. In the 2000s, Subaru started to focus on producing more performance-oriented vehicles, including the Impreza WRX and STI models. These cars were popular with car enthusiasts and helped increase Subaru's visibility and reputation for performance.

Subaru released its first electric vehicle, the Subaru Stella electric car, in 2009. The Stella EV was a small electric car designed for use in urban areas and was only sold in Japan. So far, Subaru’s only other advancement into the world of all-electric vehicles has been the announcement of the Subaru Solterra, which is due for release in 2023. Subaru has also manufactured a range of hybrid vehicles for reduced environmental impact.

Subaru Solterra

Subaru's first-ever battery electric vehicle, the Solterra, offers a unique driving experience in a battery electric vehicle with outstanding driving performance, with the same 5-star safety and rugged reliability that Subaru SUVs are known for.

The Solterra is constructed on the all-new e-Subaru Global Platform, providing a low center of gravity due to the flat battery unit being placed directly beneath the vehicle. This innovative platform works together with a newly developed high-capacity battery and heat management system, providing even more enjoyment and peace of mind for drivers and passengers alike.

Safety is a top priority for Subaru, and the Solterra comes with a new safety package fitted as standard, called Subaru Safety Sense. This pack of advanced driver assistance and collision avoidance technology includes Safe Exit Assist, Reverse Automatic Braking, 360-degree panoramic monitors and Pre-Collision Braking, creating a safer motoring environment for drivers and other road users.

The Solterra features dual electric motors and Subaru's trusted Permanent All-Wheel Drive System. This offers maximum confidence and control at all times by continuously shifting power to the wheels that have the most traction. The upgraded version of the X-MODE AWD system provides added confidence on rough roads, allowing drivers to navigate deep mud, snow, or steep, slippery slopes in a controlled, worry-free way. With a minimum ground clearance of 210mm, the Solterra can go places traditional electric vehicles typically can't.

Inside, Solterra offers ample passenger space and generous legroom in the rear, due to its long wheelbase and flat floor. Overall, the Solterra represents a significant step for Subaru into the electric vehicle market.

Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid was first introduced in 2019 as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). It combines the versatility of a small SUV with the efficiency of an electric powertrain, making it an attractive option for drivers who prioritize fuel economy and reduced emissions.

The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack produces 148 horsepower. The Crosstrek Hybrid has an EPA-estimated all-electric range of 17 miles (27 km) and a combined fuel economy rating of 35 mpg (6.7 L/100 km). It features Subaru's signature all-wheel drive system, which makes it a good option for drivers who frequently encounter challenging road conditions, such as snow or rough terrain.

Overall, the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is a practical and efficient choice for drivers who are looking for a versatile SUV with advanced technology and reduced environmental impact.

Subaru Outback Wilderness XT

The Subaru Outback Wilderness XT is a hybrid variant of the Outback SUV that was launched in 2022. It features a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack, which together produce 260 horsepower.

The Outback Wilderness XT has a fuel economy rating of 30 mpg (7.8 L/100 km) and can tow up to 3,500 pounds (1,587 kg). It combines a hybrid powertrain with Subaru's signature all-wheel drive system and advanced off-road capabilities, including a lifted suspension, all-terrain tires, and additional skid plates.

The model is a practical and efficient choice for drivers who are looking for a versatile SUV with advanced technology, off-road capability, and a lower environmental impact. It’s especially well-suited for drivers who enjoy outdoor activities, such as camping, hiking and off-road exploration.

Subaru e-Boxer

The Subaru e-Boxer is a mild-hybrid system available in select Subaru models outside of the United States. The e-Boxer system combines an electric motor with a gasoline engine, allowing for increased fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.

The electric motor is integrated into the transmission and provides additional power to the engine during acceleration, while also allowing for regenerative braking. The system includes a lithium-ion battery pack that is charged through regenerative braking or through the gasoline engine.

It is designed to improve fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance or drivability, and provides increased torque and acceleration, especially at low speeds. This helps to reduce fuel consumption as well as emissions.

Future Subaru models

Subaru has not yet provided details on its future plans for electric cars beyond the Solterra, but it is likely that the company will continue to develop and release electric models in the coming years. The global shift toward electric vehicles, combined with the increasing demand for sustainable transportation options, is continuing to drive many automakers like Subaru to invest in electric vehicle technology.

Subaru has also stated that it aims to reduce the carbon footprint of its vehicles by 90% by 2050, which suggests that the company will likely prioritize the development and production of electric and hybrid vehicles in the future. Additionally, the partnership with Toyota, which is a leader in hybrid and electric vehicle technology, suggests that Subaru is committed to investing in electric vehicle development for the long term.

Already making waves with its first and only all-electric vehicle, Subaru looks set to take the eco-friendly car industry by storm.
