Motorists must have a valid vignette, when entering the motorways M1, M3, M5, M6 and M7.
All Hertz vehicles registered in Hungary are equipped with the E-Vignettes. For vehicles not registered in Hungary, E-Vignettes can be purchased (Post offices, Gas stations, Offices of the Hungarian Automobile Club -MAK-).
There is no need to put the motorway sticker on your windshield as payment is inspected electronically without stopping the vehicle by your license plate number at any point within the territory.
You must keep the control coupon in the vehicle for the whole validity period.
Fines
If a vehicle without a valid sticker is stopped by the police, a fine of HUF 15,300.00 (approx. € 58.00) within 15 days or over 15 days HUF 63,750.00 (approx. € 240.00) has to be paid on the spot or would have to be paid to the Hungarian authorities. It is more than likely that foreign residents will have to pay on the spot.
In case of lost highway card or sticker HUF 4,000.00 will be charged (approx. € 16.00).
Likely cost of the vignette
A sticker for a passenger vehicle of less then 2.10 meters high and valid for one calendar year is HUF 49,190.00 (approx. € 135.00)
