At the start of the rental period, the renter must have held a valid and recognised driving licence in Austria for at least one year, which must be presented at the time of rental. Driving licences from EU and EEA countries as well as from certain third countries (e.g. Switzerland, Japan, Monaco) are accepted.
Non-recognised driving licences
Driving licences from certain countries are not recognised in accordance with current Austrian law. These include, but are not limited to, driving licences from: Afghanistan, Bolivia, Burundi, China (excl. Hong Kong, Macao & Taiwan), El Salvador, Honduras, Iraq, Yemen, Cameroon, Colombia, Kosovo, Libya, Nepal, Nicaragua, Oman, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania and Tonga.
International driving licences and translations
Driving licences from countries outside the EU/EEA that are not directly recognised in Austria only entitle the holder to drive a vehicle if an international driving licence or a certified translation (German or English) is also presented - and only for a maximum stay of six months.
