Does my own insurance have liability coverage?
The answer depends on the state you live in and the type of policy you have. With LIS, you don’t have to report incidents to your insurance company, so your premiums won’t increase following any third-party claims.
What about credit card coverage?
Credit card coverage may vary by each company and may not cover third-party liability claims. Typically, they are not a primary form of insurance and only reimburse you for amounts not covered by any other insurance.
What happens if I damage someone else's property with my rental car?
As long as you weren't using the car in a prohibited manner, you’ll be covered for up to $1,000,000 of protection from any third-party claims.*
Exclusions
There are some exclusions to this coverage which we feel you should know. Under Liability Protection, in the event of an accident, you will not be protected for third party liability:
- If LIS is not accepted at commencement of the rental or if you fail to pay the charges for LIS.
- If you or an authorized driver operated the rental car in violation of the Rental Agreement. Including, but not limited to, operating the car while legally intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other absorbed elements.
- If the car or LIS coverage was obtained by fraud or misrepresentation. LIS is third party liability coverage only.
- Except where permitted by law, LIS does not cover bodily injury to you or any authorized operator of the rental car or to your or their family members who are related by blood, marriage or adoption and reside in your or their household.
Does Liability Protection apply everywhere?
You and authorized drivers are covered while driving the rental car within the U.S. and Canada, but only if the car is rented in the U.S. Coverage does not apply in Mexico.
How do I make a LIS claim?
Your LIS coverage will be automatically included with the claim after you’ve reported the accident. You must report the accident according to the steps in your Rental Agreement.
