Porsche invented the targa top and originally fitted its 1966 version of the classic 911 sports car with a removable roof panel, naming it the 911 Targa. The name stuck and has become the standard description for a sports car featuring a roof that’s halfway between a convertible and a coupe. It has a removable panel that creates an open top, although the rear structure of the car remains - something Porsche call the safety cabriolet.
If you hire today’s Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS, you’ll get a sports car with a fabric panel roof that retracts at the press of a button, but still retains that element of safety. You can have open-top motoring with the reassurance of anti-roll protection, courtesy of a stylish brushed aluminum hoop.
The GTS badge means a high level of trim, so expect luxury and plenty of high technology. The latest version features four-wheel drive and a six-cylinder 3.9-liter engine and seven-speed manual gearbox. The top speed is a breathtaking 188mph and the acceleration, from 0-60mph, takes just 4.7 seconds. The combined fuel economy is a surprising too, at 31mpg. No wonder then some reviewers called the 911 Targa 4 the sports car that can do it all.
