Austin Bergstrom International Airport, fondly referred to as ABIA (which, as it would happen, is not the airport code), is not all that different from Austin, Texas. For being frequently visited and widely recognized, it is much smaller and more quaint that you might initially expect. This is an airport that tailors exclusively to local shops and restaurants - the emerald green of the Starbucks siren and the McDonald's golden arches are nowhere to be found here. Instead, you'll find a well-selected assortment of Tex-Mex joints, hand-spun ice cream shops, and not one, not two, but six live music venues. And best of all? You don't have to take a bus to pick up your Austin rental car - the lot is right on the premises. If you've got time to kill, check out some on the things that make ABIA supremely special.
Salt Lick is so well-loved in this airport that you'll find it in two flavors: The Salt Lick Taco Bar and The Salt Lick Bar-B-Que. This Hilly Country favorite is known for its insanely delicious breakfast tacos and a truly Texan barbeque experience (and stuffed baked potatoes). To make it especially convenient, you can find both in the Barbara Jordan terminal on the west side of the airport.
Don't worry if you don't have extra time to stop at one of these joints - the airport itself serves as a large gallery of local Austin artwork. At the baggage claim you'll find a vending machine filled with fresh flowers (that's right, fresh flowers), and the bustling downtown that makes the city so famous is only 5 miles away in your Austin rental car. Whatever you do on your trip, remember: Keep Austin Weird.
