The Hoover Dam and Lake Mead
Just 30 miles west of Las Vegas, the Hoover Dam has been keeping the ferocious Colorado River at bay since 1935.
Pack your hiking boots to explore this area to its fullest. You’ll find a collection of hot springs, mountain trails and recreational areas.
After an afternoon of exploring, you can satisfy your appetite around Callville Bay. Grab a bite to eat on the marina, or watch the sun set with a cocktail in one of the houseboats.
Valley of Fire State Park
See Nevada’s fiery-red sandstone formations at Valley of Fire State Park. With more than 40,000 acres to explore, with Aztec Sandstone dates back 150 million years.
When you arrive, stop off at the visitor center before heading out on your hike. Wander the park to spot all sorts of characterful formations, from elephants to beehives.
Visit at dawn or dusk to see the red canyons ablaze from the reflection of the sun.
Incline Village and Lake Tahoe
This is one of the biggest spots near Lake Tahoe and is only 36 miles from Reno. Park up your rental car in the town and get stuck into the activities of Lake Tahoe.
Relax on the lake’s beaches or take a paddleboard or rent a boat and get out on the open lake.
Spooner Lake is further south and has more than 50 miles to explore – hike, ride a mountain bike, or go on horseback.
Diamond Peak Ski Resort is north-east of Incline Village and offers up a range of ski sports for every age.
Great Basin National Park
Another great place to get lost in nature is Great Basin National Park. The area is known for its ancient bristlecone pines, but also boasts expansive caves and mountain summits to explore.
Minimal air pollution also makes this a great spot to camp out and look at the night sky.
