If you stayed in Interstate 80 across Nebraska, you'll find that Nebraska is a region of farm and ranchland, however, if you venture off the heavily travelled interstate, you'll find that Nebraska offers wide-open beauty and unique surprises. Nebraska, which is located directly in the middle of the Midwest and Western regions of the country, offers a dichotomy of urban and rural experiences for visitors making their way through in their Nebraska rental car. From a more urban perspective, travelers can visit museums and one of the best zoos in the country. While on the more rural side of things, travelers can easily access Lake McConaughy for some water recreational activities.
Just off I-80 in Grand Island, Nebraska, Nebraska's Highway 2 has been named one of the top 10 most scenic road trips in the country. This 5-hour 275 mile road trip takes you through some remote, but beautiful countryside. The Nebraskan Sandhills is the largest sand dune formation in the Western Hemisphere. You never know what you'll find off the beaten path. From wild-life rescues to recreational parks and lakes, including the Nebraska National Forest, which is the only hand-planted forest in the United States, you'll also find more unusual sites such as car henge, a replica of Stonehenge made out of cars and Dobby's Frontier Town. Pack the car, but be prepared, cell phone service can be spotty in this remote area.
If you're looking to enjoy the natural environment that Nebraska has more than enough of, a good place the check out would be Lake McConaughy. A result of the George P. Kingsley Dam, Lake McConaughy is 22 miles long and 142 feet deep, and has been in Nebraska since the early 20th century. Today, the lake serves as a major tourist destination with water sports and additional attractions that aim to educate visitors about the history and culture of the area. Camping in the wilderness surrounding the lake could make for a great summer vacation, but if you'd rather have more comfortable living quarters, there are also resorts and houses in the area that can be rented.
