Step back to the days of Robin Hood with a visit to Nottingham Castle, said to have once been the base of the Sheriff of Nottingham. Dating back to Norman times in the 11th century, these walls have witnessed legends, civil war sieges, murder and scandal. Since the mid-19th century, the castle has been a museum and art gallery.

The history of lace
Head to the Lace Market and explore streets dating back to the Middle Ages, when Nottingham was the lace capital of the world. A dense sprawl of warehouses and narrow alleys make up the area to this day. Admire Victorian buildings and red-brick warehouses, now home to cutting-edge creative businesses and upmarket restaurants.
Stop off at the National Justice Museum in the Lace Market area to learn about British crime and punishment over the centuries. A city of literature
In 2015 Nottingham was officially deemed a UNESCO City of Literature. It’s no surprise as the winding streets and old buildings were the inspiration for famous authors including DH Lawrence and Lord Byron.
Drive out to the stately house Byron called home. Inside Newstead Abbey you’ll find the poet’s private apartments, perfectly preserved since he lived there during the early 19th century.
Admire the views that inspired one of the greatest romantic poets, and find tranquility in the ornate Japanese garden in the sprawling grounds, where peacocks strut their stuff.
Visit Eastwood, a short drive from Nottingham, to discover the birthplace of DH Lawrence. His Victorian home has been renovated back to its original state, complete with furniture and personal items from the Lawrence family.
You can get an authentic feel for Lawrence’s life in a Victorian mining colony, which shaped some of this greatest works. From here it’s the perfect opportunity to explore the surrounding countryside.
Woodland walks in a legendary forest
Head to the legendary Sherwood Forest and walk in the footsteps of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Once a royal hunting ground, ancient trees and mossy groves line the peaceful walking trails.
