Turin, or Torino in Italian, combines a thriving industrial economy with an easy charm, thanks to its elegant squares and tree-lined boulevards.
It offers access to the nearby Alps and the wider Piedmont area, a region with a well-deserved reputation for food and wine-producing excellence.
The city is also the home of Juventus – one of the most successful soccer teams in Europe. Renting a car with Hertz allows you to explore all this and more on your trip to Turin.
Towering reputation
The ideal way to get your bearings as you kick off your Turin adventure is with a visit to the Mole Antonelliana, a 550-foot tower offering views over the whole city. Built in the 19th century and originally designed to be a synagogue, you may recognize its eye-catching aluminum spire from one of the local coins.
If you have a head for heights, why not take the panoramic lift up to the 280-foot high viewing gallery and enjoy the views of the city below. The tower is also home to the Museo Nazionale del Cinema, a film museum containing fascinating exhibits from the likes of Marilyn Monroe.
The magic of museums
Somewhat fittingly for the home of car manufacturer Fiat, Turin boasts an excellent motor and technology museum, the Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile. Located on the Corso Unità d'Italia road on the west bank of the River Po, the site is a former Fiat factory and has since been converted into a fascinating visitor attraction.
The museum traces the motor car's evolution, from its clunky early days to more futuristic modern incarnations. There’s also a temporary exhibition room that houses various collections not always linked to the world of motoring, with past displays featuring art, sculpture and photography. There’s enough to entertain everyone, so being a car enthusiast isn’t compulsory.
Also well worth a visit is the Museo Egizio, which contains the most significant collection of ancient Egyptian treasures outside of Cairo. Opened in 1824, it houses the world's largest papyrus collection as well as a priceless statue of Ramesses II. You'll find it on the Via Accademia delle Scienze, right in the center of the city near the River Po.
Sporting greats
For sports fans, no trip to Turin is complete without a visit to the stadium of one of Europe’s most well-known clubs, Juventus. The famous venue has been the team’s home since 2011
The stadium is located in the north of Turin, just off the city's Tangenziale beltway. If you're lucky enough to time your visit right, you may be able to get tickets to see Juventus play live – try to reserve online if you can.
If not, you can visit the Juventus Museum, which tells the story of the club’s history. Alternatively, take a stadium tour, which you can arrange online or at the stadium itself.
All these attractions and plenty more are easily accessible when you rent a car at Turin Airport.
