The city of Trapani stands behind a large natural harbour on the coast of Sicily. The dramatic shoreline here, with towering cliffs and sandy beaches, is considered one of the best in Italy. Visitors hiring a car in Trapani can explore this scenic region of headlands, islands and inlets. The city itself stands right at the western tip of Sicily's triangle, about 30 miles west of Palermo and facing the protected Egadi Islands just off the shore. The vast area of salt flats to the south of the city is now a protected nature reserve. Drivers will appreciate the A29 motorway, which links Trapani with the rest of the island.
Rent a car in Trapani and you'll soon find that the city densely fills a flat peninsular jutting into the Mediterranean at the foot of Monte Erice. Its large harbour is still busy with fishing boats today. Explore the narrow streets of the old city to find a taste of the character of medieval Trapani. The highlights comprise of several historic churches, including the impressive Basilica of Maria Santissima Annunziata. Look out for Renaissance statues, fountains and cloisters. There's an interesting archaeological museum housed in a 17th-century watchtower and a Jewish ghetto area dating back 500 years. Or take the cable car ride up to the top of Erice, where you'll find the remains of an ancient city. There are views of Africa from here on a clear day, and if you're driving, you'll be able to find the local beaches too. The best is at Marausa, six miles to the south. You'll also be able to discover the spectacular sea stacks along this coast, like those at Scopello and the Gulf of Castellammare. And don't forget that Trapani is the setting-off point for boat trips to the popular Egadi Islands, with sandy beaches, fishing villages and renowned caves and rock formations.
