Driving in and around Stuttgart Airport

Jump in your rental car at Stuttgart Airport and you’re only a 20-minute drive from the heart of the city – just take the B27 north-bound and follow signs for the city center. You’ll find plenty of parking lots in the city as well as park-and-ride locations on the outskirts, if you want to explore some of the area on foot.

It’s worth being aware that, like any other major city, traffic can become congested at peak times. If you do need to travel, it’s worth allowing yourself some extra time.

If you’re wanting to experience more of south-west Germany, the Black Forest – or Schwarzwald in German – is a highlight of any driving vacation. Since it’s such a remote landscape, parking is rarely an issue, with lots of hotels and camping areas catering for guests. The area is just a two-hour, 90-mile drive from the airport along the A81. Once you leave the A81 and drive towards the forest, you’ll be navigating through traditional countryside roads and passing many small villages on the way.

Alternatively, if you’ve got a night or two to spare, head to Munich, a two-and-a-half-hour drive away south-east along the A8. It’s one of Germany’s most iconic cities, with the breathtaking Nymphenburg Palace being its headline act.

If you are traveling with children over three years old, German law states they must be seated in the back of your car. Children under 12 must also be in a child safety seat, so make sure to take precautions before setting off.

A quick guide to Stuttgart Airport

With a vast number of parks and woodlands – not to mention its close proximity to the Black Forest – Stuttgart is considered one of the greenest cities in Germany. Many visitors note there’s a businesslike feel to the city center, which is unsurprising as it’s the European headquarters of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.

While its car industry links will inevitably attract professional travelers, there’s certainly no shortage of culture and beauty on display. Stuttgart is a city full of museums, galleries and amazing 20th- and 21st-century buildings.

Must-see attractions

The Mercedes-Benz Museum attracts car fans from all the world – and it’s not hard to see why. It’s packed full of outstanding exhibits and shows visitors how this iconic brand and its founders, Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, played a crucial role in Germany’s history.

A 20-minute drive out of the city, Castle Solitude – or Schloss Solitude – is another tourist favorite with grand views across the surrounding area. It’s easy to spend the day wandering its beautiful pathways and gardens, taking in the incredible vistas.

The Kunstmuseum in the city center, meanwhile, offers a bold vision of Stuttgart’s future with its impressive cubic design. The art museum opened in 2005 and offers a whole host of fun exhibits to explore. Focusing on four main themes, the artwork featured aims to address both current and international issues.

Relax in the green shade

With romantic lawns and gorgeous flower patches complementing its centuries-old trees, Killesbergpark is a green favorite for visitors and tourists alike. Whether you want to go for a summer picnic, an early morning run or enjoy a stroll with the family, kick back at one of this welcoming parks cages, and enjoy a coffee before deciding where to go next.

Day trips from Stuttgart

While Stuttgart has plenty of attractions to keep visitors entertained, there’s no denying it’s a beautiful location from which to explore western Germany. Whether you’re looking for romantic castles, moody forests or relaxing spas, you’ll find something exciting when you rent a car from Stuttgart Airport.

The town of Kirchheim unter Teck offers visitors a charming place to visit on vacation. Here, you’ll find everything from a beautiful old town to stunning landscapes. It’s just under a half-hour drive from Stuttgart, following the A8.

The region’s most magical attraction is undoubtedly Hohenzollern Castle, a fairytale fortress that attracts thousands of visitors each year. It’s around an hour’s drive away from the airport and easily accessible when you take the B27 highway. The idyllic castle has a wonderful picture gallery, and, most incredibly, the Prussian King’s 1888 crown.

With so many places to choose from, Stuttgart Airport is the ideal landing point to start your driving vacation in Baden-Württember. So, when you collect your keys from us at the airport, you’ll only be moments away from the action.
