Founded by the Duke of Bavaria and Saxony in 1158, Munich is the capital of the state of Bavaria and the third largest city in Germany. The city’s architecture combines the historic original buildings with the new modernist structures. Rent a car from Munich Main Railway Station and you can take in the historic old town nearby, including Marienplatz which is said the heart and soul of Altstadt, the oldest inner city church in the district - the Peterskirche, and the city’s most popular market the Viktualienmarkt.
To enjoy some fresh air in the city, visit the Englischer Garten, one of Europe’s largest city parks. This oriental influenced park is home to the Chinese Tower and the Japanese Teahouse, providing even the keenest walkers or explorers with plenty to see. The city is at its busiest during the end of September when the iconic Oktoberfest is celebrated. Hire a car from Munich Main Railway Station and you can also check out the scenic Starnberger See, Munich’s closest lake, which is around 20 miles outside the city.
