The Mitte district of Berlin is right in the heart of the city. If you pick up a hire car here you’ll soon find the area includes many of the major sights of the German capital. The Mitte region stands alongside the Spree waterway but the road connections with other parts of the city are good. Look out for the major Friedrichstrasse Street running north to south through the district - it is lined with major shops and cultural venues and passes through what used to be called ‘Check-Point Charlie’ between the old West and East Berlin.
If you have a hire car in Berlin’s Mitte district you’ll be able to easily visit many of the city’s most popular attractions. This is where you’ll find Museum Island, with the best museums and the imposing multi-domed Berlin Cathedral. In the centre of the district is Alexanderplatz, known to locals simply as ‘Alex’. This large public space was a major landmark in the former East Germany. Look out for the Rotes Rathaus 19th-century city hall nearby and you can’t miss the Fernseturm, a TV tower alongside Alex - it’s Germany’s tallest structure and the views from the café at the top are breathtaking.
