Explore Viking history
Overlooking Aalborg from the nearby hills are the burial grounds of Lindholm Høje. With sites originating from both the Viking Age and the Iron Age, these grave-spotted mounds offer a fascinating insight into the past – and an important window into Norse history.
Almost 700 graves have been uncovered here, topped by well-preserved stone markings, as well as around 150 stone burial ships. The on-site museum is home to several of these, along with artifacts and trinkets found during archaeological digs.
Discover more about the Viking way of life and chart the history of the local area before heading out to behold the mysterious mounds themselves.
The royal residence
The 16th century timbered Aalborghus Castle – also sometimes known as Aalborghus Manor – was once the residence of King Christian III, who erected it as a defensive point along the entrance to the Limfjord.
Added to and restored over the centuries, Aalborghus Castle has undergone extensive renovations throughout the years, with an entirely new south-facing wing designed in the early 1800s and further renovations to the old granary occurring in 1954.
A stroll around the grounds – and even the dungeon when it is open in the summer months – provides a wonderful insight into Danish history and the importance of Aalborg as a trading post and site of royal power, from which a series of Danish kings secured their lands.
Venture to beautiful Egholm
Sitting in the middle of Limfjord is the tiny island of Egholm. With just a few inhabitants, this little Scandinavian oasis has been left much as nature intended. A popular spot to venture on a day trip, the beaches here are just a short ferry journey away, with multiple services running regular trips to the island.
Egholm’s shores provide wonderful panoramas across to Aalborg’s colourful waterfront, but the real reason to visit here are the walking and cycling routes that criss-cross this narrow stretch of land.
With several huts and lodges on the island, it’s possible to stay overnight amid the peace and quiet of the retreat.
